In a sharp reaction to the way national media reports on Kashmir, the Governor Satya Pal Malik said on Friday that he was “disappointed” because Kashmir is being “demonised at the national level and even a small incident (in the state) is blown out of proportions and not projected as it should be”. This is the first reaction that has come from the Governor since the President rule has been imposed in the state of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). He expressed his anguished over the way media reports about Kashmir while speaking in a function organised by the state health society, National Health Mission J&K, for felicitation of the people involved in measles rubella vaccination campaign. He said “It’s very unfortunate that Kashmir is being demonised in Delhi. A death in Kashmiri becomes national headline”.

The Governor added “I come from a village where local mortuary sends five to 10 dead bodies daily and it doesn’t find a mention even in city’s newspapers.

He said “Delhi was searching for incidents they can misuse for own benefit. There are deliberate attempts to spread indoctrination and fanaticism. Kashmir has been deliberately demonised and no one talks about positive things that happen in the state”.

Malik said the positive developments like recruitment of 1000 doctors in 40 days and incident-free panchayat and municipal polls are “rarely make news”. He emphasized that the government is making all efforts to “channelise energies of the youth in a positive manner”.

The Governor said “If you lock children after 6 pm at homes they will do something. If not positive, they try negative things. So to channelise their energies we are investing a lot in sports”. In this function he mentioned that the lands have been identified in the villages for the stadium. Also two international stadiums, one for football and another for cricket are coming up in Srinagar and Jammu respectively. He said “I wish international matches would also be held in the state soon”. He praised the health department for successfully covering the 100 percent population in Kashmir and 99 percent in Jammu province during Measles Rubella Vaccination Campaign. He said “I can proudly say that if we have at least one dozen secretaries like Atul Dulloo (principal secretary heath and medical education department) we would change the development scenario in Jammu and Kashmir.” He also said that the central government and election commission will decide when to hold elections in the state of J&K.
