Speaking in one day conference ‘Kashmir: The Way Forward’ organised by the Observer Research Foundation in New Delhi, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Patron Muzaffar Hussain Baig said that Kashmiri Muslims are with India and this fact cannot be changed at any forum. He added, “I believe Muslims of Kashmir will stay with India as there is no option of remaining independent”.
Remaining independent was not an option for any princely state including J&K during 1947
The suzerainty of the British crown over princely state lapsed as soon as India got independence but remaining independent was not the option for any princely state after the creation of two dominions i.e. India and Pakistan, on August 15, 1947. Lord Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of India and the first Governor-General of independent India, on July 25, 1947 advised a gathering of the rulers of princely states to join either of the two dominions, i.e. India or Pakistan, in their own interest. Soon after India attained independence and many princely states acceded either to India or Pakistan because remaining independent was not an option for them.
Baig said “There has been a radical transformation in the nature of dissent since 1947”. “The choice in front of the people in J&K is not between India and Pakistan but between paradise and hell.” He lamented that no secular voices are being heard “But those who kill make the headlines and the aspirations of the common Kashmiris remains unheard in this process”. He even said that though he was initially supportive of third front in the state but the situation has changed now and he does not believe in third front led by Sajjad Lone.
