Terrorist turned armyman Nazir would be awarded Ashoka Chakra posthumously

Lance Naik Nazir Ahmed Wani made supreme sacrifice while fighting the terrorists in South Kashmir’s Shopian district. He will be awarded the Ashoka Chakra posthumously, India’s highest peacetime gallantry medal. A press release from President secretariat mentioned “Lance Naik Nazir Ahmad Wani exhibited the most conspicuous gallantry in personality eliminating two terrorists and assisting in the evacuation of his wounded colleagues and made supreme sacrifice in the highest traditions of the Indian Army”. He was also awarded the prestigious Sena Medal twice. He survived by a wife and two children aged 20 and 18 years.
Wani abjured terrorism and join army in 2004
Wani himself was once a terrorist but he abjured violence and joined Indian army. Thereupon, he was involved in counter-terrorism operations. Wani joined Indian army in 2004 in Territorial Army’s 162 Battalion. Since, then he was actively involved in every counter-terrorism operations in valley but Indian army lost this brave man in November 2018 in an encounter with six terrorists.
