Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin Son’s bail plea rejected by Supreme Court

The Apex Court of India, on Friday, rejected the plea of Syed Shahid Yousuf, son of Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin challenging the Delhi High Court order dismissing his bail petition in an alleged funding case. The bail plea of Yosuf, who was arrested by NIA in 2016, was earlier rejected twice by trial court and the Delhi High Court. The Supreme Court said unless the time given to National Investigation Agency (NIA) for investigating the case is completed, bail cannot be granted to the accused. Counsel of Yosuf said that the trial court decision to grant 180 days to NIA to complete the investigation was erroneous. "Under the provisions of law, it cannot be done. The extension of time till 180 days can only be done in a piecemeal manner and not in one shot," the counsel argued. The bench however said that it all depends on the nature of case and its ramification.
Case against Yosuf
Yousuf was arrested by the NIA in connection with a 2011 terror-funding case for allegedly receiving money from his father, who is currently based in Pakistan. The case is related to the transfer of funds from Pakistan to Jammu and Kashmir through hawala channels via Delhi, which the agency believed was used in funding terrorism and secessionist activities. . NIA has alleged that Yosuf also has connections with proscribed terrorist organisations like Hizbul Mujahideen. The NIA has claimed that Yousuf has received a total of nearly Rs 4.5 lakh through eight international wire transfers. It had also registered two other cases related to funding -- one in November 2011 and the other in May 2017. It had filed a charge sheet against 10 people including Salahuddin in the April 2011 case.
About Syed Shahid Yousuf
Yousuf (42) was posted as agricultural assistant in Budgam of central Kashmir when he was arrested by the NIA on October 24, 2016. He is the son of Mohammed Yusuf Shah, better known as Syed Salahuddin. Apart from heading Hizbul Mujahideen, his father is also the chairman of the United Jehad Council (UJC), a conglomerate of terrorist outfits operating in the Kashmir Valley. Yosuf’s father was declared a specially designated global terrorist by the US Department of State in June, 2017.
