SIT formed by UP Government to probe 1984 anti-Sikh riot in Kanpur

UP Government formed SIT to probe the circumstances and reasons that led to the escalation of riots in Kanpur in 1984, which were ensued by the death of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. These riots of 1984 resulted in the loss of at least 125 lives in Kanpur.
 
 
 
As per the official release on Tuesday night, a four-member SIT team headed by retired UP Director General of Police Atul, will probe the matter and give its report within six months. Other members of the team include retired District Judge Subhash Chandra Agarwal and retired Additional Director (Prosecution) Yogeshwar Krishna Srivastava.

The SIT team was constituted in the backdrop of August 2017 Supreme Court notice to the state on a petition seeking a SIT probe of the riots. Based on a petition filed by Manjeet Singh and others, the apex court has asked the state government to form the SIT. Many Sikhs were killed brutally on road during the mayhem of 1984 and several cases were filed in Nazirabad and Bajaria and other police station mentioned an official.
