China is facing criticism from across the globe over its treatment to Uighur Muslim population in Xinjiang. Incriminating reports reveal that Uighur Muslims are forced into detention centres for the purpose of moving them away from their religious faith. The policy paper of China justifies its decision of re-education of Muslims by mentioning that it has been taken in response to riots and violent attacks that the government has suffered at the hands of Muslims in Xinjiang province. In the detention centres, Uighur Muslims are re-educated so that they will unlearn their culture, Islamic practice and became loyal to the Communist Party.

In 2015, China banned its civil servants, students and teachers especially in the Xinjiang region from fasting on Ramzan. In a move against this Chinese inhumanity, #FastFromChina campaign is being run on Twitter. Contending that China proscribes its Uighur population from fasting during Ramzan, the movement urges Muslims to boycott using Chinese products this Ramzan in solidarity with Uighur Muslims those who cannot exercise their Right to Religion. The campaign has also asserted that just like China supported the genocide of Muslims in Burma, it is now committing genocide against the Uighur Muslim population in Xinjiang province.

China sees fasting as an indicator of extremism and following the Islamic culture is prohibited in Xinjiang. If anyone is seen following the Islamic religious practices, he or she will be put in one of Xinjiang’s internment camps, which the government calls “transformation-through-education centres”. It is alleged that over 1 million people are being put in these camps for re-education.
