“Chowkidar Chor Hai” jibe: Rahul Gandhi tendered unconditional apology to Apex Court
   08-May-2019

Congress President Rahul Gandhi tendered unconditional apology in the Supreme Court for attributing the ‘Chowkidar Chow hai’ jibe against Prime Minister Modi to the court’s order on Rafale Review plea. He said he has "unintentionally and inadvertently" linked its Rafale case order to his "Chowkidar chor hai" phrase against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

On April 10, Rahul Gandhi said that the Supreme Court order says, “Chowkidar Chor Hai” during a campaign rally. BJP spokesperson Meenakshi Lekhi filed a contempt plea in the Apex Court against the remark of Rahul Gandhi that was incorrectly attributed to the top Court’s order in Rafale deal case. While stating that SC has never said so, the SC issued a notice to the Congress President. The SC had allowed the admissibility of three documents in their hearing of the review petitions on the Rafale verdict. Rahul, Congress and the supportive ecosystem had propagated the step as a big victory against the NDA government.

Rahul Gandhi and Congress party drew much flak for his jibe against the top Court and the later development drew much embarrassment to the party. The Supreme Court had also objected over the affidavit submitted by Rahul Gandhi. The SC took exception to the Rahul Gandhi’s affidavits, as the Congress president regretted his remarks but did not apologise and asked him to submit a fresh affidavit. Hence, Rahul Gandhi apologies to the SC.
