In a bipartisan appeal, over 54 U.S. lawmakers have written to President Joe Biden, urging action against escalating human rights abuses and the erosion of civil liberties in Pakistan following its flawed February 2024 elections.
The letter highlights electoral fraud, suppression of the PTI party, and the detention of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. Lawmakers criticized Pakistan’s authoritarian measures, including mass arrests, internet restrictions, and silencing dissent.
The group also condemned the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad for prematurely recognizing the new government and failing to advocate for democratic principles. They called for immediate U.S. action to secure the release of political prisoners and prioritize human rights in U.S.-Pakistan relations.
The lawmakers stressed that sustainable ties with Pakistan require a strong commitment to democracy and universal rights.
