Panchayat Elections IN KASHMIR

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha announced on Saturday that Panchayat elections in Jammu and Kashmir will be held soon. He attributed the delay to several factors, including the delimitation of wards and the reservation process for Other Backward Classes (OBCs).

The Lieutenant Governor assured that elections would be conducted once weather conditions improve, paving the way for the participation of over 35,000 elected Panchayat representatives in driving development across the Union Territory.

He also emphasized his government’s commitment to safeguarding the rights of West Pakistan refugees, members of the Gorkha community, and Valmiki families, ensuring their integration into the region’s socio-economic fabric.

Meanwhile, the Jammu administration has commenced the process of updating voter lists following directives from the State Election Commission. The exercise, which began on November 11, is a preparatory step for conducting free and fair elections.

It is noteworthy that the last Panchayat and municipal elections were held in October and December 2018, respectively, and the term of these local bodies has already ended.
