The Uttar Pradesh Information Department has reported that over 3.61 crore devotees took a holy dip in the sacred Triveni waters today as part of the ongoing MahaKumbh Mela. The total number of pilgrims who have participated since the beginning of the festival has now exceeded 19.94 crore as of January 28.
However, the massive influx of devotees led to a tragic turn of events as reports emerged of a stampede at one of the bathing ghats. While official confirmation on casualties is awaited, initial inputs suggest that several people may have been injured, with some feared dead due to the overwhelming crowd surge. Authorities and emergency response teams have been deployed to manage the situation and provide medical assistance to those affected.
“The situation in Prayagraj is under control. Around 8-10 crore devotees are present in Prayagraj today. There is continuous pressure due to the movement of devotees towards the Sangam Nose. A few devotees have suffered serious injuries when they tried to cross barricading on Akhara Marg. The injured have been shifted to hospitals for medical treatment. Since the Mauni Amavasya mahurat started last night, a large number of devotees have been coming in”, Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath stated.
