Voting is currently taking place for four Rajya Sabha seats from Jammu and Kashmir on Friday. Members of the Legislative Assembly are casting their votes to elect the representatives who will go to the Upper House of Parliament.

This is the first Rajya Sabha election being held in the Union Territory after the abrogation of Article 370 and the reorganisation of Jammu and Kashmir in 2019.

The four Rajya Sabha seats have been lying vacant since February 2021, after the terms of Ghulam Nabi Azad, Nazir Ahmad Laway, Mir Mohammad Fayaz, and Shamsher Singh Manhas expired.

Major political parties like the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the National Conference (NC) have fielded their candidates. The NC is contesting all four seats, while the BJP is contesting three. The Congress and the PDP have declared their support for the NC. The NC is confident of winning all four seats, whereas the BJP claims it will win one.

Officials said that all arrangements have been made to ensure smooth and transparent voting. Security has been beefed up around the Assembly complex to maintain law and order.

The results of this election will decide who will represent Jammu and Kashmir in the Rajya Sabha for the next six years.
