India strongly hit back at Pakistan during a high level UN Security Council debate on ‘Promoting International Peace and Security through Multilateralism and Peaceful Settlement of Disputes’, held under Pakistan’s presidency of the 15 member Council for the month of July.
India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Parvathaneni Ha akistan, N Security Council debat rish, delivered the national statement and responded sharply to Pakistan’s remarks on Jammu and Kashmir.
“I am constrained also to respond to the remarks made by the representative of Pakistan. The Indian sub-continent offers a stark contrast in terms of progress, prosperity and development models. On the one hand there is India which is a matured democracy, a surging economy, a pluralistic and inclusive society. At the other extreme is Pakistan steeped in fanaticism and terrorism and a serial borrower from the IMF. As we debate promoting International Peace and Security, it is essential to recognise that there are some fundamental principles which need to be universally respected, one of them is zero tolerance for terrorism. It ill behoves the member of the Council to offer homilies while indulging in practices that are unacceptable to the international community.”
The debate was presided over by Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. He raised the Jammu and Kashmir issue and also mentioned the Indus Waters Treaty during his speech.
In response, Indian officials highlighted that after the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, India has decided to keep the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960 in abeyance until Pakistan stops supporting cross border terrorism in a credible and permanent manner.
Turkey also made a reference to Jammu and Kashmir during the debate, but India’s reply made it clear that terrorism cannot be tolerated in any form and no country should misuse international platforms for false narratives.
