Terror Attacks The first attack took place during the annual Shri Amarnath Yatra on August 1, when terrorists opened indiscriminate fire on pilgrims resting at a camp near Pahalgam, Anantnag district. Two armed terrorists stormed the site and began firing with AK-47 rifles, killing 32 people and injuring over 60 others. Among the deceased were 21 Hindu pilgrims, seven local Muslim porters and shopkeepers, and several security personnel.
Just hours later, the same evening in simultaneous attacks, terrorists killed 27 Hindu Migrant labourers from UP, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh in Mirbazar-Qazigund and Sandoo-Acchabal in Anantnag district.
The terror did not stop there. On August 2, in the early morning hours, terrorists struck a remote village in Doda district of Jammu region, where 11 members of the Hindu community were massacred. Later the same night, a group of Village Defence Committee (VDC) members on night patrol were ambushed, resulting in eight deaths and two injuries. VDCs, formed in the mid-1990s, consist of trained local villagers who assist in guarding rural areas against terrorist threats.
In yet another horrifying incident that day, terrorists gunned down seven members of a surrendered terrorist’s family in Kupwara district.
The then Prime Minister of India, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, clearly said that Pakistan was behind these attacks and was trying to ruin the efforts to bring peace to the region.
