PM MODI HAILS GREEN HYDROGEN PUSH AT KANDLA PORT

New Delhi, August 4: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday lauded the commissioning of India’s first Make-in-India green hydrogen plant in the port sector at Deendayal Port, Kandla, calling it a “commendable effort” that aligns with the country’s met zero goals.

“This is a commendable effort, championing sustainability and powering our Net-Zero vision,” the Prime Minister posted on X, sharing a video from the event.

The announcement comes as the Deendayal Port Authority commissioned the green hydrogen facility on August 2.

The plant, located at Kandla in Gujarat, is the first of its kind in the country’s port ecosystem and marks a significant step toward decarbonising operations in India’s maritime sector.

Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal responded to the Prime Minister’s message, saying: “Led by your vision, India’s Ports are leading the way in sustainability and Net Zero goals. Under your guidance, we are committed towards building a Viksit Maritime sector for a Viksit Bharat.”

The Deendayal Port Authority, in its official communication, stated that the new facility represents a “powerful stride” towards green innovation in port operations. “Deendayal Port Authority, Kandla proudly commissions India’s 1st Make-in-India Green Hydrogen Plant in the port sector — at Kandla,” the port authority said on X.

Green hydrogen is considered a critical part of India’s long-term clean energy ambitions. Its adoption in port operations is seen as a means to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, lower carbon emissions, and modernise logistics infrastructure.

The plant’s commissioning is in line with the Maritime India Vision 2030 and the National Hydrogen Mission. India has been increasingly focusing on transitioning ports to sustainable fuels, with the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways recently highlighting plans for multiple green port initiatives across the country.

The development at Kandla is likely to serve as a template for similar projects at other major ports, as India moves to strengthen its credentials as a leader in green maritime infrastructure.
