A large protest in Leh, Ladakh, demanding full statehood and its inclusion under the Sixth Schedule, turned violent on Wednesday.
During the demonstration, a group of youths allegedly started pelting stones at the police. In response, authorities fired teargas shells and carried out a baton charge to control the crowd. Amid the unrest, the BJP office in Leh was set on fire.
The protest was organised to push for faster talks with the Centre regarding the extension of the Sixth Schedule and the grant of statehood to Ladakh.
A fresh round of discussions between the Centre and Ladakh representatives, including members of the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), is scheduled for October 6 in New Delhi.
