The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has asked IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to release Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season. The decision comes amid growing strain in bilateral relations between India and Bangladesh.

KKR had bought the 30 year-old left-arm fast bowler for Rs 9.20 crore at the IPL players auction last month. His base price was Rs 2 crore, and the bidding saw competition from Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals.

According to BCCI, KKR will be allowed to name a replacement player if needed.

The inclusion of Mustafizur Rahman had triggered a political controversy, especially in view of recent incidents involving the targeting of Hindu minorities in Bangladesh.
