The Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of the National Medical Commission (NMC) has withdrawn the Letter of Permission (LoP) given to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence (SMVDIME), Kakryal, Reasi, for running an MBBS course with 50 seats for the academic year 2025–26.

The decision was taken on 6 January 2026 and has come into effect immediately. According to NMC officials, the action was taken after a surprise inspection revealed serious shortcomings and failure to meet minimum required standards.

To protect the future of students already admitted for the 2025–26 academic session, the State/UT authorities have been allowed to shift these students to other medical colleges within the Union Territory. These students will be accommodated as supernumerary seats, following NMC norms.

The withdrawal of the LoP is likely to bring an end to the ongoing protest by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Sangharsh Samiti, a group of various Hindu organisations. The Samiti had been agitating against the admission process followed by the medical college run by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board.

It is pertinent to mention that the admission of nearly 90 percent non-Hindu students in the very first MBBS batch had sparked strong reactions in Jammu. Several organisations came together under the banner of the Sangharsh Samiti, alleging misuse of donations given to the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board and demanding corrective action.
