Jammu and Kashmir authorities have deported around 150 Bangladeshi nationals who were allegedly staying illegally in the Union Territory. The group was flown from Srinagar to Bagdogra in West Bengal on a special Indian Air Force aircraft on Monday.

After reaching Bagdogra, the 150 Bangladeshi nationals were handed over to the Border Security Force (BSF) for further repatriation to Bangladesh, officials said. Police sources said some of those deported had been picked up during checks and raids at different places in Kashmir.

Officials said a survey carried out by the J&K administration with the help of police identified around 600 Bangladeshi nationals allegedly staying illegally in different parts of the Kashmir Valley. Another batch of around 150 Bangladeshis is expected to be deported on October 7.

The action comes after the Centre constituted a High-Level Committee on Demographic Change to examine demographic changes linked to illegal immigration and other factors. The J&K administration had shared details of Bangladeshi nationals identified in the Union Territory with the committee.
