The Baramulla administration on Tuesday carried out an anti-encroachment drive and demolished illegal structures from state land allegedly occupied by several people, including Tabassum, the wife of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.

The encroachers were identified as Tabassum Guroo, the wife of Afzal Guru, Sajad Ahmad Buhroo, Tariq Ahmad Buhroo and Manzoor Ahmad Buhroo. Officials said notices were served to the people occupying the land, but after they failed to remove the encroachments, the administration carried out the demolition on Tuesday.

Afzal Guru was convicted in connection with the 2001 Parliament attack and was executed in 2013. His wife, Tabassum, who now lives in Baramulla, had reportedly established a dairy farm on state land near her house, while other relatives were allegedly occupying land near Gulnar Park.

“The land, which was allegedly under unauthorised occupation, is situated in a prime location and is estimated to be worth crores of rupees. The eviction was carried out as part of the administration’s ongoing efforts to safeguard government land and prevent its unauthorised use and occupation,” the official statement said.

The Baramulla administration termed the action a significant anti-encroachment drive, during which several kanals of prime state land under illegal occupation were retrieved in the district.

The administration has indicated that anti-encroachment operations will continue across the district in accordance with the law.
