Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday congratulated Tarique Rahman on leading the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) to a decisive victory in Bangladesh’s parliamentary elections.
In a post on X, PM Modi wrote:
“I convey my warm congratulations to Mr. Tarique Rahman on leading BNP to a decisive victory in the Parliamentary elections in Bangladesh. This victory shows the trust of the people of Bangladesh in your leadership. India will continue to stand in support of a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh. Ilook forward to working with you to strengthen our multifaceted relations and advance our common development goals.”
The BNP on Friday claimed victory in the 13 th general elections as results are still being processed to elect a new government. The polls are being held to replace the interim administration that took charge after the collapse of the Awami League government in August 2024.
In another post on X, the BNP Media Cell said in the early hours of Friday:
“The Bangladesh Nationalist Party-BNP is set to form the government after winning the majority of seats.”
According to multiple media tallies, the BNP has won more than 151 seats in the 300-member parliament, crossing the majority mark.
However, the Election Commission of Bangladesh is yet to make a formal announcement of the final results.
This is the first general election since the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina following massive nationwide protests in August 2024. Her party, the Awami League, has been disbanded and barred from contesting the polls by the interim government led by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus.
The main contest is between the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its former ally Jamaat-e-Islami, in the absence of the Awami League.
The elections mark a major political shift in Bangladesh, as the country moves towards forming a new elected government after months of political uncertainty.
