
National Conference chief and former Jammu Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah narrowly escaped an assassination attempt during a wedding function in Jammu on Wednesday night.
The incident took place at Royal Park in Greater Kailash, where Abdullah had gone to attend a marriage ceremony. According to police, a man tried to open fire on him from behind during the event, but the security personnel present at the venue acted quickly and stopped the attempt.
The accused has been identified as 63-year old Jammu resident Kamal Singh Jamwal. He was immediately taken into custody by the police.
During questioning, the accused claimed that he had been planning to kill the National Conference president for the past 20 years. Police, however, have not confirmed this claim and said that a terror angle has been ruled out in the incident.
“I wanted to kill Farooq Abdullah for the past 20 years. It was my personal agenda. The weapon is my own, issued to me,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Jammu and Kashmir Police issued a statement regarding the incident.
“An attempt was made on the life of Dr Farooq Abdullah, former CM/President of J&K National Conference, when he was attending a marriage ceremony at Royal Park, Greater Kailash, Jammu. The security personnel of JKP and NSG, who were deployed with the protectee, immediately swung into action and thwarted the attempt. The accused, identified as Kamal Singh, S/o Ajit Singh, R/o Purani Mandi, Jammu, was taken into custody. The firearm used in the crime has also been recovered from the accused’s possession. Cognisance has been taken, and further investigation is underway,” J&K Police said.
