Indian Fans Criticise Sun Group After Pakistani Cricketer Abrar Ahmed Signed by SunRisers Leeds

The signing of Pakistani spinner Abrar Ahmed by SunRisers Leeds has triggered strong criticism on social media, especially from Indian fans.

SunRisers Leeds, a team owned by Sun Group and linked to IPL franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad, won the bidding war for Abrar Ahmed for £190,000 ( around Rs 2.40crore) in the upcoming The Hundred.

The tournament will take place in the United Kingdom from July 21 to August 16.

However, the signing has not gone down well with many Indian fans. Several users on social media have criticised the Sun Group and even called for a boycott of the SunRisers brand.

The anger mainly develops from controversial social media posts made by Abrar Ahmed in mid-2025, when tensions between India and Pakistan were high. According to critics, the posts mocked the Indian Armed Forces, which angered many Indians.

Fans have questioned why a franchise with Indian ownership would sign a player who made disrespectful remarks toward India and its armed forces. The issue has now turned into a major online debate, with many demanding an explanation from the franchise management.
