The Supreme Court on Thursday granted bail to Kashmiri sep
aratist leader Shabir Ahmad Shah in a terror-funding case registered under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
Shah had filed a bail plea in the case in which he is accused of being part of a conspiracy aimed at separating Jammu and Kashmir from India.
Shabir Ahmad Shah was arrested in June 2019 and later named as an accused in the second supplementary chargesheet filed by the National Investigation Agency on October 4, 2019.
Investigators alleged that the accused was involved in raising funds to disturb peace in the region by organising stone-pelting, damaging public property and planning activities against the central government.
According to the agency, Shah played a major role in promoting the separatist movement in Jammu and Kashmir. He was accused of encouraging people to raise slogans in favour of the region’s secession from India and of praising slain terrorists by calling them “martyrs.”
The NIA had also alleged that Shah received money through hawala channels and raised funds through cross-LoC trade, which were then used to support terrorist and subversive activities.
