Restrictions Imposed Across Kashmir After Protests Over Khamenei Killing

Restrictions have been imposed across all districts of Kashmir after large protests erupted over the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The authorities said the steps were taken as a precaution to maintain peace and law and order.

Security has been put on high alert, and mobile internet speeds were slowed down across the Valley on Monday. Officials said the move was meant to prevent the spread of rumours and avoid any untoward incident.

Khamenei was killed in an airstrike in Tehran on Sunday during a joint attack by Israel and the United States. Iranian state media confirmed his death, after which protests and mourning were reported in several parts of the world, including India.

Kashmir, which has a Shia population of around 15 lakh, witnessed protests at several places. Demonstrations were reported from Lal Chowk, Saida Kadal, Budgam, Bandipora, Anantnag and Pulwama.

Officials said the situation is under control and security forces are closely monitoring developments to ensure a peaceful atmosphere.
