Remembering Major Mohit Sharma on His Martyrdom Day – A True Hero of India

Major Mohit Sharma, an Ashok Chakra awardee, was a brave and valiant soldier of the Indian Army. On his martyrdom day, it is important to remember and honor his extraordinary contributions to the nation.

 

Major Mohit Sharma was born on 13 January 1978 in Rohtak district of Haryana. Hailing from the Indian Army's elite 1 Para Special Forces, Major Mohit Sharma's journey was marked by a relentless pursuit of excellence. His unwavering commitment to duty was evident in the challenging terrains of Jammu and Kashmir, where he faced the threat of terrorism head-on.

 

 

In 2008, during a counter-terrorism operation in the J&K’s Kupwara district, Major Sharma's squad received intelligence about the presence of terrorists in a house. Undeterred by the imminent danger, he led his team with precision and fearlessness. In the ensuing encounter, Major Sharma displayed extraordinary tactical acumen, neutralizing two terrorists but sustaining grievous injuries in the process.

 

During the operation, Major Sharma sustained multiple gunshot wounds but continued to fight until the terrorists were eliminated. Despite seriously wounded he kept directing his commandos, to foil the attempt of the terrorists to escape. In the ensuing battle, he realised further danger to his comrades, in a rare display of raw courage and determination charged at the terrorists, killing two of them in the close combat. Later he succumbed to his injuries and attained martyrdom fighting for his motherland in the finest traditions of the Indian Army.

 

His exceptional display of bravery and leadership not only saved the lives of his team members but also prevented a major terrorist attack. Besides Major Mohit Sharma, four other soldiers also laid down their lives in the operation which include Hav Sanjay Singh, Hav Anil Kumar, Ptr Shabir Ahmad Malik and Ptr Nater Singh.

 

For his extraordinary valor and sacrifice, Major Mohit Sharma was posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra, India's highest peacetime gallantry award.
