Martyrdom Day of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru

On March 23, India remembers the martyrdom of three great revolutionaries—Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar, and Shivaram Rajguru. Their courage, love for the nation, and sacrifice continue to inspire generations.

Bhagat Singh, born in 1907, became a strong voice against British rule. He was deeply affected by the Jallianwala Bagh massacre and the Non-Cooperation Movement. Along with Sukhdev and Rajguru, he joined the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association to fight for India’s freedom.

In 1928, the three revolutionaries killed British officer John Saunders to take revenge for the death of Lala Lajpat Rai. Even at a young age, they showed great bravery and determination.

Later, on April 8, 1929, they threw bombs in the Central Legislative Assembly in New Delhi to protest against British laws and make a statement about India’s right to self-governance. They did not try to escape and instead got arrested so they could spread their message during the trial.

During the court case, Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru remained strong and fearless. Even when they knew they would be hanged, they did not step back from their mission. On March 23, 1931, they were executed in Lahore Central Jail. Their death shocked the entire country.

Their sacrifice gave new energy to India’s freedom struggle and inspired many others to fight for independence. Their sacrifice helped speed up India’s freedom from British rule in 1947.
