A special court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has convicted and sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) a key accused in a terror radicalisation and recruitment case linked with the proscribed Taliban and Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) terrorist organisations.
The NIA special court in Bengaluru, Karnataka, has also imposed a fine of Rs.63,000 on Maharashtra resident Hamraz Worshid Shaikh, who pleaded guilty during the trial that began in April 2026.
The accused has been convicted under various sections of IPC and UA (P) Act in the case RC-04/2023/NIA/DLI (TTP Case), which was registered in April 2023. In October 2023, NIA had chargesheeted Hamraz and another accused, identified as Mohammad Arif, against whom trial is continuing.
NIA investigation in the case had revealed that Hamraz was himself radicalised into Taliban and TTP ideology through Pakistani and Afghan contacts during his stay in Saudi Arabia between 2019 to 2022. The probe had further identified an online handler known as "Hanzala", who was involved in radicalisation through an Instagram account - "Kashmir Pages".
On his return to India, Hamraz had conspired with co-accused Arif to identify and recruit vulnerable youth by propagating the terror ideology of Taliban and TTP. The duo had also formed a terrorist gang with the objective of joining TTP in Afghanistan to wage Jihad and war against India, NIA stated in a press release.
