over three decades, No terror-related fatalities reported

Jammu and Kashmir witnessed a peaceful month of May this year, with no deaths reported due to terrorism or infiltration-related incidents, according to data compiled by the South Asia Terrorism Portal (SATP). The development reflects a significant improvement in the security situation across the Union Territory.

According to the data, this is the first time in more than three decades that the month of May has passed without any loss of life linked to terrorist activities or infiltration attempts in Jammu and Kashmir.

The SATP figures show that a total of 12 people have been killed in terror-related incidents in the Union Territory so far in 2026. The fatalities include 10 terrorists and one Army jawan, with three deaths reported in January, six in February, two in March, and one in April. No deaths were recorded in May.

The contrast becomes clearer when compared with previous years. In May 2025, 14 people were killed in terror-related violence, while seven deaths were recorded in May 2024. The toll stood at 14 in 2023, 38 in 2022, 16 in 2021, and 28 in 2020.

The figures were significantly higher in earlier years when terrorism was at its peak in the erstwhile state. According to SATP data, 140 people were killed in terror-related violence in May 2006, 188 in May 2005, 195 in May 2004, 241 in May 2003, and 300 in May 2001.

Security experts believe that sustained counter-terror operations by security forces, improved intelligence gathering, and stronger anti-infiltration measures along the borders have contributed to the decline in violence.
