
Security has been heightened in parts of Jammu Kashmir’s Doda district after a man died during a scuffle with a police team in the Jai Valley area of Bhaderwah late on Thursday night. Three Special Operations Group (SOG) personnel, including a policeman who suffered serious head injuries, were also injured during the incident.
According to officials, the incident took place after a police team noticed suspicious movement in the area and challenged a group of persons. During the scuffle, the man allegedly tried to snatch a service rifle, following which a round was fired. He was taken to a hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.
J&K Police said:
“Last night, on detecting suspicious movement in general area of Jai Valley, Baderwah, police team challenged those persons. It led to scuffle, in which there was an attempt to snatch weapon. A single round fire got discharged leading to injury to the assailant. He was extricated to hospital, but succumbed. Identified as Arif from Bhaderwah. Policeman has also suffered serious head injuries. Place of incident is about 25 km from his residence. No terror angle is there. Preliminary investigation suggests that the deceased was into bovine smuggling.”
Following the incident, security has been strengthened in the area as a precaution. Police have ruled out any terror angle and said further investigation into the incident is underway.
