At least 15 newborn babies were killed after a fire broke out in the Maternal and Child Health ward of PIMS Hospital in Islamabad on Wednesday morning, according to local media reports.

The fire broke out on the third floor, where the newborn ward was located. Around 16 infants were inside the ward, but only one could be rescued alive. The babies were reportedly trapped as the fire and thick smoke spread through the ward.

The fire is suspected to have started after an air-conditioner compressor malfunctioned, but the exact cause is being investigated. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered an immediate probe into the incident and directed authorities to take action against those responsible.
