From WhatsApp to Porn Sites: Terror Groups Adopt New Digital Tactic in J&K

Security agencies have uncovered a new communication tactic being used by terror groups and their handlers to reach recruits in Jammu and Kashmir, officials said, PTI reported.
According to officials, terrorists and Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI are increasingly using pornography websites, encrypted applications and Tor-based platforms to secretly communicate, recruit and radicalise youths while avoiding surveillance on conventional social media.
Some pornography platforms offer real-time chat features, which handlers allegedly exploit to contact and coordinate with recruits. Agencies are also monitoring Tor-based apps such as Coatex and Conion, as well as other privacy-focused and anonymous messaging platforms.
Officials said some of these applications provide end-to-end encryption, self-destructing messages and registration without a phone number or email, making it difficult for security agencies to trace users.
Terror networks are also shifting away from commonly used platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Signal and using applications that can function on slower 2G and EDGE networks.
Security agencies are now strengthening their cyber-surveillance systems to track these off-grid communication channels.
