J&K: An SUV evaded a security checkpoint on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway in Ramban district early Friday, prompting police to open fire as the driver fled, PTI reported.
The incident took place around 3:30 am at the Chanderkote security checkpoint when the SUV, travelling from Srinagar towards Jammu, was signalled to stop. However, the driver ignored the signal and sped away.
Police fired three rounds at the fleeing vehicle in an attempt to stop it, but it continued towards the Nashri area. The driver later abandoned the SUV near Dalwas and escaped.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Ramban, Arun Gupta, said the suspicious Scorpio has been seized and an investigation is underway. He added that more details will be shared as the probe progresses.
A massive search operation has been launched by the Jammu Kashmir Police, CRPF, and the Army to trace the driver. Security has also been tightened in the area.
