Jammu: Kashmiri Hindu Woman with hearing and speech impairment clears class 10 at 45, Son helps fulfil her dream

Jammu: A 45-year old Kashmiri Hindu woman from Jammu, who is speech and hearing-impaired, has fulfilled her long cherished dream of completing her education by clearing the Class 10 examination with the support of her only son.
Renu Hans scored an impressive 82 per cent in the bi-annual Class 10 board examination conducted by the Jammu and Kashmir Open Schooling (JKOS) in April. The results were declared by the board on September 10.
Renu had appeared for the Class 10 examination before her marriage but could not clear it. After a gap of 22 years, she decided to give her studies another chance. Her son, Naman Koul, stood by her and helped her achieve the dream she had carried for years.
Son Helps Mother Return to Studies
Speaking to PTI, Naman said his mother often went to different places with her friends and colleagues. Seeing them work and move ahead in life, she also wanted to become independent.
“Mumma used to go to many places with her friends and colleagues. She always felt within herself, ‘Why can’t I do this? If my friends can get jobs, why can’t I? Then Mumma came to me and told me everything,” Naman said.
He said he visited different schools to find out how his mother could continue her studies. Later, he came to know about the JKOS scheme at the board office. He filled out her form, paid the fees and got her enrolled.
Naman, who himself is a Class 12 Science student, took responsibility for helping his mother with her education. Despite managing his own studies, he made time for her every evening after returning from school.
“Whenever I returned from school in the evening, I would give Mumma some time. Along with managing my own studies, I also helped her with her studies. I would clear any doubts she had,” he said.
His efforts, along with his mother’s determination, finally paid off when Renu cleared the Class 10 examination with 82 per cent marks.
“Everyone was very happy when Mumma got good result. All our relatives and friends congratulated her and gave her their blessings,” Naman said.
Family Migrated From South Kashmir
Renu and her family have their roots in Chawalgam village of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district. The family had to leave its ancestral home during the mass migration of the Kashmiri Hindu community in the early 1990s.
After migrating from the Kashmir Valley, the family was allotted a flat in Lower Roop Nagar on the outskirts of Jammu, where they now live.
Renu’s husband, Bablu Koul, is also speech and hearing-impaired. He earns a livelihood through tailoring from home.
A Story of Determination and Support
Renu’s achievement is not just about clearing an examination. It is about returning to a dream after 22 years and proving that it is never too late to learn.
With the support of her son and her own determination, she has shown that age or disability cannot stop a person from moving forward.
