J&K Assembly: BJP MLAs Walk Out After NC Demands Holidays on Sheikh Abdullah Anniversaries

Srinagar: BJP MLAs staged a walkout from the Jammu Kashmir Assembly on Tuesday after NC MLAs demanded that the birth and death anniversaries of Sheikh Abdullah be declared public holidays.

 

NC MLA Abdul Majid Larmi said the government should either announce holidays on both days or cancel the holiday on the birth anniversary of Maharaja Hari Singh.

 

Following Larmi’s remarks, chaotic scenes were witnessed in the Assembly as BJP MLAs raised slogans in favour of Maharaja Hari Singh. The BJP MLAs later staged a walkout from the House.

 

The Lieutenant Governor’s administration had removed Sheikh Abdullah’s birth anniversary, which falls on December 5, from the official holiday calendar in 2020.

 

PDP MLA Waheed Para supported the NC’s demand and also called for July 13 to be declared a public holiday.
