Ajay Kumar was swept away in the Yamuna River during a high-risk waterborne training exercise at Hathnikund Barrage in Yamunanagar district of Haryana.

His body was recovered on the night of September 2 near Bartha village in Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh. The mortal remains were brought to his native place in Akhnoor on Friday.

The second soldier who went missing in the incident, Paratrooper Aryan Patil from Maharashtra, was also found dead. His body was recovered on Thursday morning from the Hansi Branch canal near Amreheri village in Jind, nearly 200 kilometres downstream.
