Nepal observes Day of National Mourning as flood death toll rises to 1,355

Kathmandu: Nepal is observing a day of national mourning in memory of those who lost their lives in the devastating Tibet-Nepal flash floods that struck central Nepal on August 26, 2026.

 

The national flag is being flown at half-mast at government offices across the country, as well as at Nepali embassies and diplomatic missions abroad.

 

According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, the death toll from the devastating Nepal-Tibet flash floods has risen to 1,355, while around 5,000 people remain missing.

 

Security agencies continue search and rescue operations for people who remain out of contact, particularly at hydropower projects along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river corridors.

 

Meanwhile, Nepal Police has urged people not to keep, sell or distribute gold, silver, cash and other valuables found after the August 26 floods. The police has asked people who find such items to hand them over to the nearest police office.

 

The Nepal Police said in a statement on Sunday that people who find such property or important documents should inform the authorities and help return them to their rightful owners.

 

It warned that using, concealing, keeping, or buying and selling such items could constitute an offence and could result in legal action.
