NCC Cadets of Ladakh trained as future conservation Leaders, WWF conducted training program

As part of its efforts for developing future conservation leadership for conservation efforts in Himalayas, WWF – India in collaboration with National Cadets Corps (NCC) organized a two days special capacity building workshop for the cadets of NCC in Ladakh. This workshop is part of the annual tanning camp for the NCC Cadets of entire Ladakh, which is being conducted at Central Institute of Buddhist Studies (CIBS) at Choglamsar in Leh. The inaugural session of the workshop was attended by 370 NCC cadets from Leh, Nubra and Kargil along with associate NCC officers and students of CIBS at Choglamsar. This camp in being conducted by 1 st J&K (I) NCC Coy, Leh.
 
 
The camp is being led by Col.
 
The workshop started with a welcome address and a brief about the camp by Col. Shende. In his address Col. Shende gave a detailed overview about camp activities and various skill development modules for the cadets. This was followed by technical sessions of the workshop. The key note address in the workshop was delivered by Dr. Pankaj Chandan, Team Leader, Western Himalayas Landscape, WWF-India. Through his presentation Dr. Chandan, gave a detailed overview about the wildlife and wetlands of Himalayas, specially from the high Himalayan regions like Ladakh. He called upon the cadets to take pride in the unique natural heritage of Ladakh and do take steps for the conservation of the same. For this he said that it is vital that Cadets of NCC should also take a leadership role and do whatever they can for the conservation efforts in their respective areas. He also encouraged the cadets to take keen interest in the wildlife of their own areas and should also try to document such wildlife.
 
 
Another prominent speaker in the workshop was Dr. Anwaruddin Choudhury, Commissioner Secretary to the Government of Assam and a renowned wildlifer of India. In his address he shared his vast experience on wildlife of Himalayas and highlighted various key threats to wildlife of the Himalayas. During the second session of the workshop Mr. Tsewang Rigzin of WWF-India spoke about the role of Bhuddhism in wildlife conservation in Ladakh. In the same session Mr. Ravneesh Singh Klair of WWF-India spoke about need for responsible tourism in Ladakh and Ms. Meenal Pahuja of WWF spoke about the importance of grasslands of Ladakh.
 
 
The key events which were organized during this two days workshop included lectures on wildlife by experts, Panel Discussions by the students and and wildwisdom quiz on wildlife of Ladakh. In the concluding session of the workshop Dr. Pankaj Chandan from WWF hoped that this capacity building workshop will certainly help young generation of Ladakh to act as future conservation leaders.
