In 1990, reign of terror was prevailing in the Kashmir valley. Militants of JKLF were targeting Hindus one after another in broad daylight. However, fearless Kashmiri Pandits too were challenging the terror groups against all odds and to a great extent were also getting able to fail their attempts. One such example of bravery was Ashok Kumar Qazi, resident of Shashyar in Srinagar.

On 24th Feb 1990, The activist was brutally tortured and murdered on the streets before locals of the area

Qazi was a social activist and worked with the Handicrafts Department. On 24th Feb 1990, a group of three terrorists including Bitta Karate accosted him at Tankipora market in Zaindar Mohalla locality while he had gone for shopping. Bitta shot him on the knuckles. He fell and cried in agony for help but none among the passersby or the shopkeepers stepped forward to help him. They not only turned their eyes away instead of helping him but didn’t care to raise voice against it. Even though they knew Qazi well for his social work, no one intervened to save his life. In their sadistic frenzy, the three murderers then started a dance of death around the helpless Qazi. They pulled his hair out, slapped him taking turns and spat on his face. One of them even unfastened his trousers and urinated on him. On profusely bleeding, the militants did not kill him immediately but enjoyed the writhing and twitching of his body. They tortured him riotously and enjoyed the sight of his blood bathed body. The siren of a distant police van, however, mercifully ended his agony as panicking killers fled after pumped bullets into his stomach and chest leaving his dead body on the frozen road.

Qazi died a martyr’s death while terrorist Bitta Karate roamed free and alive leading other horrendous acts of cruel killings.
