Ahead of Lockdown 2.0 reviewal that ends on May 3, the Union health ministry has issued new criteria to combat COVID 19, categorizing states across the country as Red, Orange, and Green zones. Of 733 districts split into each category, 130 districts have been identified as red zones, 284 are marked as orange zones, and 319 as green zones. Likewise, the districts declared as red zones will soon face stricter restrictions post May 3, whereas orange and green zones will get a bit of relaxation with restrictions being eased down accordingly. Meanwhile, Metropolitan cities Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Bengaluru are among the states designated as Red Zones.
 
To battle with COVID-19 ably equipped, the central government on Thursday released the full list of districts with their designated zones based on factors such as number of cases, doubling rate, extent of testing and surveillance feedback. In the meeting, chaired by the Cabinet secretary along with all Chief Secretaries and Secretaries of the health Departments, the criteria that define the zones as Green is when there have been no new cases for 21 days.
 
With 733 districts across India split into red, orange and green zones, the metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Chennai may soon turn into ‘No movement’ zone with stringent restrictions after the lockdown 2.0 ends.
 
 
Delhi’s all 11 districts have been declared as Red zones, while Delhi-NCR, Ghaziabad and Gurgaon are designated as Orange zones.
 
So far, the number of Red zone districts is highest in UP with 19 zones marked as Red, Maharashtra has 14 red zones, 11 in Delhi, 12 in Tamil Nadu, 10 in West Bengal, 9 in each Gujrat and MP and 8, lowest in Rajasthan. However, the Red Zones will face stricter restrictions imposed post May 3, when the lockdown 2.0 ends.
 
 
Areas declared as Orange Zones have 20 districts in Bihar, 36 in UP, 24 in Tamil Nadu, 19 in Rajasthan, 15 in Punjab, 19 in MP and 16 in Maharashtra, the districts will have partial restrictions imposed by the government.
 
Likewise, 30 districts of Assam, 25 each in Chhattisgarh and Arunachal Pradesh, 24 in MP, 21 in Odisha, 20 in UP and 10 in Uttarakhand have been marked as Green zones, which means restrictions will be eased down in the aforesaid areas.
 
Meanwhile, the health ministry has directed all states that based on all the feedback and additional analysis at state level, states could declare additional red or orange zones as appropriate. Containment zones will be marked based on residential colonies, mohallas, municipal wards, police station areas and municipal zones and towns in urban districts. In the case of rural districts containment zones will be marked based on villages, clusters of villages, and gram panchayats. It also said that a buffer zone around a containment zone will be demarcated. Extensive surveillance for cases will be undertaken in these buffer zones.
