The Supreme Court today refused to restore 4G internet in the Union Territory of Jammu Kashmir on terms of security situation in the region. It also asked the central government and UT administration to form a committee of secretaries to inspect the on-ground security situation in Jammu and Kashmir before reaching to a final decision.

In its decision SC said instead of passing a general order restricting internet speed across the UT, the HPC will take district-wise stock of situation and then decide whether or not to lift internet restrictions. SC struck a balance between national security and public need.

As Supreme Court has declined the restoration of 4G internet services, the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir will have to wait until things get back to normal in the region.

In addition, the court has set up a special committee in compliance with the central government and J&K administration to examine the feasibility and need of 4G in the region. Special committee will have secretaries from Ministry of Home affairs and UT administration who on basis of on ground security analysis will take a final call and thus proceed further.

The Supreme Court had on Sunday stated that it will pronounce its verdict on restoration of high-speed internet in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday, after reserving its verdict. The central government in past few months has gradually lifted restrictions from the Union Territory, however, 4G internet remains suspended in the valley since Article 370 abrogation by the Govt on Aug 5, 2019.

Earlier on May 4th, the three- Judge bench headed by Justice Ramanna had reserved its verdict saying all issues will be considered before pronouncing the order.
