Martyr Rucher Kumar Koul, a brave son of soil who sacrificed his life to protect the motherland. Born on 4 July 1958 into a Kashmiri Pandit Family in Bhaderwah, a beautiful town in Doda district of J&K. Since childhood, he was associated with Rashtra Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) which infused in him the real spirit of nationalism.
When terrorism was it's peak in Kashmir, the Pakistani sponsored terrorists started terrorising the people of Doda district. This mountainous district with ravines dense forests and natural caves was most suitable for terrorists to hide and to make their hideouts. In Doda district, people of Bhaderwah town were hardcore nationalists and terrorists knew if these people are uprooted first then there will b no resistance at other places.
On 15 August 1992, terrorists and their over ground workers resorted to heavy gun firing and grenade bursting which created war like situation. Terrorists killed two students, who had gone to the jungle to collect wood, one of whom was 9th class student. Their deaths sent shockwaves among the people by the inhumane way they were killed. Their eyes were gouged and their eyes and hearts were also taken out. At that time, local Police was ill-equipped to counter the terrorists.
At that time, to stop exodus and to handle the worst situation, Rucher Kumar Koul took a stand and he knew that locals in this far flung area will have to fight back in order to save themselves from the terrorists. He charged the people to the extent that terrorists Ak 47's can b defeated with lathis and desi guns.He created a dedicated team of young men, and they started resisting the terrorists almost at every place whether it's mohalla or jungle or caves. This brought Rucher Kumar on the hit list of terrorists.
To bring the troubles of local people to the attention of state as well as central govt., a mass agitation was started by Rucher Kumar for 41 days. Shops, schools, post offices and other offices also remained shut. Though many attempts were being made by terrorists to kill Rucher Kumar but eventually on 7 June 1994, terrorists gunned him down while working in the fields along with his wife nearby his home. Terrorists pumped 30 to 40 bullets on his chest, and he died as a hero. He sacrificed himself for his motherland.
Martyr Rucher Kumar was highly religious and nationalistic person. All his life he remained RSS worker. Though his life was short, but he made place in the heart and minds of people. He showed us how a higher spirit of nationalism became biggest weapon against terrorists Ak 47 guns. On 7 June every year, the people of Bhaderwah celebrate Balidan Diwas and pay tribute to Martyr Rucher Kumar Koul who laid down his life for the community and country.
