A luxury Bentley Mulsanne car which was stolen from London was found in Karachi on Saturday during a raid conducted by the customs department of Pakistan.
The customs agency in Karachi, confirmed that the UK's intelligence agency had tipped off Pakistani authorities that the stolen vehicle was parked in a house in Karachi's Defence Housing Authority (DHA) area, a posh residential neighborhood.
The vehicle costs more than $3,00,000 (approximately 60.6 million Pakistan rupees) and it is the brand's largest and most expensive handcrafted sedan.
"A credible information was received from a national agency of a friendly country that a grey Bentley Mulsanne, V8 Automatic, VIN Number SCBBA63Y7FC001375, Engine Number CKB304693 was stolen from London and their intelligence agency indicated that the said vehicle is supposed to be parked at 15-B, South 10th Street, DHA, Karachi," Federal Board of Revenue's (FBR) Collectorate of Customs said in a statement,".
As per reports, the high-end vehicle was stolen in London a few weeks ago, and those responsible for the theft were able to bring it into Pakistan using the credentials of a senior bureaucrat from an eastern European nation. The two accused Jameel Shafi and Naveed Bilwani were taken into custody. "The arrested persons were identified as Jameel Shafi, son of Shafi Ahmed, a resident of 10th South Street, House No 15-B, Phase II Extension, and Naveed Bilwani, son of Rafique, a resident of House No159, Khayaban-e-Roomi, DHA,".
As per media reports, the accused had failed to deactivate or remove the GPS tracking system in the car, which is how the UK authorities got hold of the car and zeroed in on the exact location of the vehicle.
During the raid, the Pakistani officials found a Bentley with a Pakistani registration and number plate. However, upon inspection, they discovered that the chassis number of the Bentley matched the number of the Bentley that was stolen from the UK. Pakistani authorities seized the vehicle after the owner failed to furnish supporting documents. The owner of the car was also arrested. Officials said that the registration of the vehicle was forged.
During investigation, the owner is reported to have said the car was sold to him by another person who had also agreed to clear the documentation process from the authorities concerned. Custom officials said that Sindh Excise and Taxation department illegally registered this stolen vehicle without completing all legal formalities.
