Barshalla Massacre 1996 Jammu

After the exodus of Kashmiri Hindus from Kashmir valley in the 1990’s, Pakistan sponsored Islamic terrorists began targeted killings of Hindus in the mountainous districts of Jammu region too. One among many is Barshalla massacre in Doda district.

On 5 January 1996, Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists brutally killed 16 Hindus in Barshalla of Doda district. Sixteen Hindu villagers were mercilessly killed after terrorists ordered them to line up before separating them from Muslims.

Heart wrenching is 10 amongst 16 belonged to one Hindu family, their only fault was they were Hindus. Terrorists while taking advantage of the remoteness of the area easily fled from the spot.

Barshalla Massacre 5 january 1996 Jammu

Hindus selective killings in Pir Panchal region of Jammu began in 1993. The first such massacre in this belt took place in 1993, when 17 Hindus were killed in cold blood after separating from Muslims in Sarthal area of Kishtwar district by the terrorists.

Irony is, even after more than 26 years of this massacre, Hindus are still being selectively targeted by the terrorists just for being Hindu. Wet eyes of the close ones remain the same till the end of their lives. Someone has rightly said, you can’t die with the dead but living with their haunting memories is more brutal than the death itself.
