Today 5 August,2023, marks the fourth anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution of India and with it comes a picture of what has changed in the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir in the these four years in comparison with what it was like when this article was intact.

A visible sea change on the ground in the post abrogation of article 370 era is in the security scenario of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. Significant improvement is visible throughout in the terror related violence. Terror related incidents have seen a decline of over 90 percent.

Stone pelting has become a thing of past. It used to be a major law and order problem in the Kashmir valley prior to the abrogation of article of 370. Stone pelting incidents have seen a massive decline of 92 percent. It clearly indicates improved socio political stability and reduced impact on day to day life due to strikes and hartals.

Hartals and bandh calls by the separatists groups was everyday affair which resulted in shutdowns of educational institutions and markets. Such incidents have seen a major decline from 302 to 31, almost 90 percent change.

Similarly, graph of encounters and counter terrorism related operations has also seen a decline of 32 percent. “Encounters and counter-terrorism operations decreased from 539 to 369 , representing a 32 percent decrease,” says the report.

The number of civilians killed in terrorist violence reduced from 155 in the pre-Article 370 period to 138 in the post-Article 370 period, making a 11 percent decrease.

The instances of civilians being killed during law and order situations significantly decreased from 132 to zero in the pre to post-Article 370 period, marking a 100 percent decrease.

It has led to better security and counterterrorism measures and increased investments in the development projects. It has created a conducive environment for the growth of industries, tourism, health infrastructure and educational institutions.
