A tragic plane crash at South Korea’s Muan International Airport has claimed 176 lives, leaving only two survivors on December 29. The plane, Jeju Air Flight 2216, was flying from Bangkok to Muan when the accident occurred.

The plane, a Boeing 737-800, skidded off the runway during landing and hit a concrete barrier. It then caught fire, turning into a massive blaze. Investigators believe a problem with the front landing gear or a bird strike may have caused the crash.

There were 181 people on the plane—175 passengers and six crew members. Sadly, most of them didn’t survive. Among the passengers, 173 were South Korean, and two were Thai nationals.

Two crew members were rescued from the tail section of the plane and are now in the hospital. Emergency workers rushed to the scene and managed to put out the fire in about 40 minutes. Over 1,500 people were involved in the rescue operations.

Authorities have recovered the plane’s black box, which will help determine the exact cause of the crash. Investigators are looking into possible technical failures and bird strikes.

This is one of South Korea’s worst air disasters in decades and has left the nation in shock. Jeju Air expressed its sorrow and promised to help the victims’ families. The airline, which had never experienced a fatal accident before, is cooperating fully with the investigation.
