Remembering Lance Naik Albert Ekka on his death anniversary: The Param Vir of 1971 Indo-Pak War

Today, 03 December, the nation solemnly remembers the unparalleled bravery of Lance Naik Albert Ekka, the hero of the 1971 Indo-Pak war, on his death anniversary. A soldier of the Brigade of The Guards, he sacrificed his life on this day while displaying extraordinary courage during the Battle of Gangasagar, earning him the nation’s highest gallantry award, the Param Vir Chakra, posthumously.

As the 1971 war escalated, Ekka’s battalion was tasked with capturing Gangasagar, a key position held by the enemy. Demonstrating selfless dedication, he advanced under intense enemy fire to neutralize enemy bunkers that were proving to be a major hindrance to Indian troops. His bravery shone brightest when he charged at an enemy machine gun post, bayoneted enemy soldiers, and silenced the Medium Machine Gun (MMG) that had pinned down his comrades.

Even as he sustained grievous injuries during the operation, Ekka fought valiantly till his last breath, ensuring the success of his unit. His courage not only inspired his battalion but also turned the tide of the battle in India’s favor.

He was honoured with Param Vir Chakra for his supreme sacrifice in the service of nation posthumously, making him an immortal symbol of patriotism and valor.
