PVC Awardee Major Hoshiar Singh

On this day, December 6, we honor the extraordinary courage of Major Hoshiar Singh, the recipient of the Param Vir Chakra for his heroics during the Indo-Pak War of 1971. Born on May 5, 1936, in Sisana village, Haryana, Major Singh displayed unparalleled bravery while commanding C Company of 3 Grenadiers in the Battle of Basantar.

Under relentless enemy fire, he led his men through heavily mined fields to capture the critical Jarpal position. Despite intense counterattacks supported by tanks, Major Singh, though seriously wounded, inspired his troops with his indomitable spirit. Operating a damaged machine gun himself, he inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy, forcing their retreat and leaving behind 85 dead, including their Commanding Officer. His courage and leadership were instrumental in this decisive victory.

Post-war, Major Singh served as an instructor and rose to the rank of honorary colonel before retiring in 1988. He passed away on December 6, 1998, but his legacy of valor and dedication to the nation endures.
