2 May 2020: Remembering Martyr Major Anuj Sood, Shaurya Chakra Awardee (P), who during an anti-terrorism operation in Jammu and Kashmir, sacrificed his life to save civilians and also eliminated terrorists
 
 
Major Anuj Sood, a gallant officer of the Indian Army, epitomizes valor, dedication, and sacrifice. Born in a family with a strong military background, Major Sood was destined to serve his nation with unwavering commitment.
 
 
Hailing from Kangra of Himachal Pradesh, (later relocated to Chandigarh), Major Anuj Sood joined the Indian Military Academy with a burning desire to contribute to the defense of his motherland. Graduating as a commissioned officer in 2012, he was posted to one of the most challenging operational areas in the country.
 
 
Major Sood’s exemplary leadership and valor came to the forefront during a counter-terrorism operation in Jammu and Kashmir. In the face of intense gunfire from terrorists, Major Sood displayed exceptional courage and strategic acumen, leading his team with precision and determination.
 
 
2 May 2020, His citation reads:
 
 
Major Anuj Sood had been operating as a Company Commander in 21 Rashtriya Rifles in Kupwara District of Jammu & Kashmir.
 
 
On 01 May 2020, on receiving information of two terrorists in Watsar Forest, he launched operation to intercept them. On spotting the terrorists, the officer challenged them but the terrorists fired back indiscriminately and escaped. The officer restrained own fire and saved lives of civilians stuck in the crossfire.
 
 
The terrorist's location was re-established on 02 May 2020 at Chanjimula and the officer himself deployed the close cordon at the suspected house. In an act of conspicuous bravery, he alongwith Commanding Officer and three others moved inside the target house to evacuate civilian hostages. Unmindful of his personal safety the officer relentlessly fired upon and pinned down hardcore terrorists resulting in evacuation of three civilian hostages. In an attempt to extricate the balance two civilian hostages, he physically assaulted and injured one Local terrorist, thus saving lives of the two hostages.
 
  
During this gallant act the officer sustained multiple gunshot wounds and sacrificed his life.
 
 
For displaying conspicuous gallantry, extraordinary valour and self-sacrifice, Major Anuj Sood is awarded "SHAURYA CHAKRA (POSTHUMOUS)". The Shaurya Chakra is a testament to his indomitable spirit and unwavering commitment to duty in the face of grave danger.
