On June 20, 1999, during the Kargil War, Captain Sanjeev Singh, Rifleman Mehar Singh, and Naik Dev Prakash displayed extraordinary bravery and strategic acumen amidst heavy enemy fire to recapture the strategically important Point 5140 at Drass in Kargil.

They, with nerves of steel, physically assaulted the enemy and neutralised them in hand-to-hand fight.

For their courage and dedication, they were awarded the Vir Chakra.

Point 5140 was one of the highest peaks in the Drass sector, providing a commanding view of the surrounding areas. Controlling this peak meant having a tactical advantage over the enemy.

From Point 5140, Indian forces could observe and control key enemy supply routes, making it difficult for the enemy to move reinforcements and supplies.

Recapturing it paved the way for subsequent operations to clear the Kargil sector of enemy intrusions, contributing to the overall success of Operation Vijay.

To commemorate the victory of Indian Armed Forces and pay tribute to the supreme sacrifice of the Gunners in “Operation Vijay”, Point 5140 at Drass, in Kargil sector has been christened as “Gun Hill”.
