DSP Mohammad Ayub Pandit

In 2017, on the intervening night of June 22-23, DSP Mohammad Ayub Pandit was lynched by a jihadi mob outside Jama Masjid in Srinagar. The police officer was on-duty ensuring security around the area on the night of Shab-e-Qadr. However, on the night of Shab-e-Qadr, which is considered the holiest month of Ramadan, it is ironic that a DSP stationed outside Jama Masjid to ensure the security of those observing fasts was murdered by miscreants inside the mosque.

Seven years ago on 22-23 June, 2017, DSP Mohammad Ayub Pandit had gone inside the Jama Masjid in Srinagar to offer prayers on the occasion of Shab-e-Qadr. Contented with the tight security of the mosque, Ayub took out his phone to take pictures in the courtyard. However, some miscreants noticing him there first went close to him, asked Ayub Pandit for his identity card. And even before Ayub could sense the danger that awaited him, a brief scuffle ensued.

Even though Ayub tried to convince them nobly, but all in vain. In the scuffle, DSP Ayub Pandit pulled out a pistol in self-defense but was attacked by a provocative mob. Amid the voices calling him a CID officer, the aggressive crowd started shouting slogans of Pakistan Zindabad, while hailing terrorist Zakir Musa. Zakir Musa was the head of the Islamic State's terrorist organization in Jammu and Kashmir.

While Ayyub Pandit was being aggressively attacked by the members of the Islamic mob, the separatist leader Mirwaiz was giving arguments inside the mosque.

Within no time the mob tore the clothes of a brave officer on duty and brutally murdered him. When Police found DSP Ayub's body it was in a completely mutilated condition. The body was then brought to the police control room for identification. Although when the incident happened, the DSP was not in his uniform so it was his family who identified the body and the police came to know of his real identity.

In 2017, the murder of a senior police officer on-duty created a sensation across the country. Jammu and Kashmir Police arrested dozens of accused including Muhammad Danish and Mudaisir Ahmed in this case. But the main accused was said to be terrorist Sajid Ahmed Gilkar, who was active with terror outfit Hizbul Mujahideen. The terrorist was then killed in an encounter on 12 July 2017.
